7shifts Review 2026
7shifts is a restaurant scheduling platform that has grown into labor management: time clock, tip pooling, payroll and compliance alerts. For a restaurant it is one of the best-fitting tools on the market. For anyone else it is the wrong tool, and its per-location pricing deserves a close look before a multi-unit group signs up.
HiveDesk editorial rating
4.4 / 5
Best-in-class for restaurant scheduling and tip management. Marked down for per-location pricing that compounds across units, add-on fees for payroll and tips, and reliability complaints in independent reviews.
What Is 7shifts?
7shifts is workforce software for restaurants, bars and hospitality operators. It started as a scheduling app and now covers the full hourly staff cycle: building schedules against sales forecasts, clocking staff in and out with the 7punches app, managing availability and shift swaps, pooling and paying out tips, running payroll as an add-on, and alerting managers to break and overtime rules that vary by state.
The product is priced per location rather than per employee, and the plan ladder runs from a free Comp tier for a single small location up to a Premium tier that bundles task management and tip management. 7shifts renamed its plans in 2025 (older reviews refer to Entrée, The Works and Gourmet), which is one reason published prices differ from listing to listing.
This review is based on the 7shifts pricing page, the Capterra and GetApp listings and an August 2026 third-party cost analysis, all fetched in September 2026. The 7shifts website renders its pricing dynamically, so where listings disagree the page says so. We have no commercial relationship with 7shifts.

What 7shifts Does Well
Scheduling that matches how restaurants actually run
Templates, availability, shift pools and swap approvals are designed around front and back of house, sections and stations. Capterra reviewers most often cite an intuitive interface and significant weekly time savings on scheduling.
Sales-based labor forecasting
Because 7shifts pulls sales data from the POS, it can project labor cost against forecast sales while the schedule is being built. That is the feature that separates it from general scheduling tools.
Tip management built in
Tip pooling rules, POS-based tip calculation and payouts to employee cards are part of the product rather than a separate vendor. For tipped operations this removes a real administrative burden.
A genuinely free plan for a single small location
The Comp plan covers scheduling, availability and time-off requests at no cost. A new cafe or a single-unit operator can run on it until the team outgrows the employee cap.
High independent ratings
On the Capterra listing fetched in September 2026, 7shifts holds 4.7 out of 5 from 1,212 reviews, with 4.7 for ease of use and 4.7 for customer service.
Where 7shifts Falls Short
Per-location pricing gets expensive for multi-unit groups
Every plan is priced per location. A five-location group on Pro pays five times the plan fee before payroll or tip add-ons. Third-party cost analyses put a five-location, 100-employee group in the range of $15,000 to $17,000 a year depending on the bundle.
Published prices are inconsistent across listings
The Capterra and GetApp listings we fetched show Pro at $69.99 and Premium at $149.99, while an August 2026 analysis shows $79.99 and $134.99. 7shifts restructured its plan names in 2025, and the pricing page itself loads dynamically. Get a written quote before budgeting.
Payroll and tips cost extra on most plans
Payroll is an add-on priced per location plus a per-employee fee, and tip management is bundled only on the top plan. The headline plan price rarely matches the invoice for an operator who uses those features.
Reliability complaints in reviews
The most common negative themes in the Capterra summary are frequent glitches and disruptions, unreliable notification delivery and limited mobile app functionality. For a tool that staff rely on to see their shifts, notification reliability is not a small issue.
Restaurant-only by design
7shifts is built for restaurants, bars and hospitality. Contact centers, BPOs, agencies and remote teams will find the labor forecasting irrelevant and will miss computer-based time tracking, activity monitoring and desk-oriented attendance entirely.
Independent review data: 7shifts holds a 4.7 out of 5 overall rating from 1,212 reviews on Capterra as of September 2026, with sub-ratings of 4.7 for ease of use, 4.6 for value, 4.7 for customer service and 4.5 for features.
Who Should Use 7shifts?
7shifts is a good fit for:
- Single-location restaurants, cafes and bars that want free or low-cost scheduling
- Operators who schedule against sales forecasts from their POS
- Tipped establishments that want pooling and payouts handled in one system
- Managers who need state-specific break and overtime alerts for hourly staff
- Groups that will price out per-location fees and still find the bundle worthwhile
7shifts may not be enough for:
- Any business outside restaurants and hospitality
- Remote, BPO and contact-center teams that need computer-based time tracking and monitoring
- Multi-unit groups sensitive to per-location fees stacking up
- Operators who want payroll and tips included in the base plan price
- Teams that need a desktop tracker or project-level time tracking
7shifts Alternatives
If you run a restaurant, the closest alternatives are other hourly scheduling tools. If you do not, look at a workforce management tool built for your type of team.
- Homebase serves restaurants, retail and local services with a free plan for up to 10 employees and per-location plans from $30 a month. It lacks 7shifts' sales forecasting depth but covers scheduling, time clock, messaging and payroll. Read our Homebase review.
- When I Work is a general hourly scheduling and time clock tool with per-user pricing, which can be cheaper than per-location pricing for small units. See When I Work alternatives and the HiveDesk vs When I Work comparison.
- HiveDesk is for desk-based, remote, BPO and contact-center teams rather than restaurants. It provides automatic time tracking with screenshots and activity monitoring, scheduling, attendance, leave management, timesheets and approvals for $5 per user per month. It has no tip management or POS integration, and it is not a restaurant tool.
- Clockify, Toggl Track and Hubstaff are general time trackers rather than scheduling platforms. Read our Clockify review, Toggl Track review and Hubstaff review if time tracking is the priority.

Payroll and tip payouts are priced separately. Because the figures differ between listings, confirm current pricing on 7shifts.com before budgeting.
Yes. The Comp plan is free and includes scheduling templates, availability, time-off requests and one-way announcements for a single location with a small team. Listings we fetched put the employee cap between 15 and 20. Time clocking and labor budgeting require a paid plan.
Yes. Time clocking through the 7punches app on a tablet or phone is included from the Essentials plan, with break and overtime tracking. PTO accruals and advanced time clocking features are on Pro. Screenshots and computer activity monitoring are not advertised and are not relevant to restaurant staff.
For a single restaurant or cafe, yes. The free plan covers basic scheduling and the Essentials plan adds time clocking and labor budgeting at $39.99 a month for the location. For small businesses outside hospitality, 7shifts is a poor fit because its forecasting, tip and compliance features are restaurant-specific.
Payroll is available as a paid add-on rather than being included in a plan. An August 2026 third-party analysis lists it at $39.99 per location per month plus $6 per employee paid. Confirm the current add-on price with 7shifts.
7shifts pulls tip data from the POS, calculates distributions based on hours worked and custom pooling rules, and can send tips directly to employee debit cards through Tip Payouts. Tip management is bundled into the Premium plan and available as a paid add-on on lower plans.
Both serve hourly teams, but 7shifts is restaurant-specific with sales forecasting and tip management, while Homebase serves a broader mix of retail, food service and local businesses with a free plan for up to 10 employees and per-location paid plans from $30 a month. Read our Homebase review for the details.
Homebase and When I Work are the closest alternatives for hourly scheduling. For desk-based, remote, BPO and contact-center teams, HiveDesk is the better fit: automatic time tracking with screenshots and activity monitoring, scheduling, attendance and leave management for $5 per user per month.
