EOR in the Dominican Republic: Complete 2026 Guide

Guide to using an EOR in the Dominican Republic — costs, compliance, top providers, and comparison with setting up a local entity.

·Updated ·4 min read

The Dominican Republic is the Caribbean's largest economy and a growing nearshore destination. With 4.5-4.8% GDP growth forecast for 2026, a bilingual (Spanish/English) workforce, proximity to the US East Coast, and an established BPO sector, it is an attractive option for companies building nearshore teams.

Dominican labor law includes mandatory Christmas salary (double salary in December), AFP pension contributions, SFS health insurance, and employer costs of approximately 16-18% above salary. An Employer of Record (EOR) manages this compliance.

Why Use an EOR in the Dominican Republic?

Entity setup complexity. Registering a business takes 45-60 days, all documents must be in Spanish, and you need Labour Department registration before hiring. Bank account setup adds another 20-30 days.

Mandatory Christmas salary. Employers must pay an additional month's salary (salario de Navidad) in December. This is legally mandated, not discretionary.

Social security contributions. Employers contribute to AFP (pension, 7.10%), SFS (health, 7.09%), and SRL (occupational risk, 1.25-1.85%), plus INFOTEP (training, 1.00%). Total employer contributions run approximately 16-18%.

Size-based minimum wages. The Dominican Republic has different minimum wages based on company size — from DOP 16,993 for micro-enterprises to DOP 29,988 for large enterprises.

Strict termination rules. Termination without cause requires severance (cesantía) based on years of service, plus pre-aviso (notice pay) and any accrued benefits.

Pro Tip

The Dominican Republic's proximity to the US East Coast (same time zone as EST) and established BPO sector make it a strong nearshore alternative. Many BPO operations are concentrated in Santo Domingo and Santiago, with a bilingual talent pool experienced in customer support and back-office functions.
