Average Salary in India (2026): Official Wages, Roles and Costs
A regular salaried employee in India earns an average of INR 21,285 a month (about $222) according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey for 2025, while BPO customer service roles pay INR 26,000 to 31,000 and software developers INR 46,000 to 92,000 before employer contributions.
A regular wage or salaried employee in India earned an average of INR 21,285 a month, about $222, in calendar year 2025, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) Annual Report 2025 from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), released on March 27, 2026. Men in salaried jobs averaged INR 24,217 and women INR 18,353.
That average covers every salaried worker in the country, from a security guard in a small town to an engineer in Bengaluru, and it says little about what a foreign employer will pay for a specific role. A customer service representative in a formal BPO earns roughly INR 26,000 to 31,000 a month, a mid-level software developer INR 46,000 to 92,000, and statutory employer contributions add another 9 to 13 percent. This guide separates the official statistics from the market ranges and shows the full cost of an Indian hire.
Exchange rate
USD figures use INR 95.99 per dollar, the rate published by the Open Exchange Rates API on September 19, 2026. The rupee has depreciated steadily against the dollar for a decade, which is why Indian salaries look cheaper in USD each year even as they rise in rupees. Set salaries in rupees and review the USD budget annually.
The Official Numbers
India does not have a single "average salary" statistic in the way the Philippines or Mexico do. The PLFS, the country's main labor survey, reports average earnings by type of employment, and the three types earn very different amounts.
| Employment type | Share of workers (2025) | Average monthly earnings | USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular wage or salaried | 23.6 percent | INR 21,285 (men INR 24,217; women INR 18,353) | $222 |
| Self-employed | About 56 percent | INR 12,144 (men INR 17,914; women INR 6,374) | $127 |
| Casual labour (daily wage, excluding public works) | About 20 percent | INR 455 a day for men, INR 315 for women; about INR 11,550 for 30 days | $120 |
Source: MoSPI, PLFS Annual Report 2025 press note, March 2026. The combined regular-wage figure of INR 21,285 and the self-employed and casual totals are from the annual report as summarized in the PIB release and Wikipedia's Income in India entry; the press note itself reports the male and female figures.
Three points follow. First, only about one worker in four holds a regular salaried job. The rest are self-employed or casual, and their earnings are far lower, so any "average Indian salary" that blends all workers lands near INR 15,000. Second, the salaried average is a mean across the whole country and every sector, including low-paid formal jobs in retail, security, and manufacturing. Third, the PLFS reports earnings, not cost to company (CTC), which is the number Indian employers and candidates negotiate. CTC includes the employer's provident fund contribution, gratuity, and often insurance and allowances, and can run 15 to 25 percent above take-home pay.
That last point explains most of the discrepancies you will find online. Forbes Advisor India quotes an average base pay of INR 9.45 lakh a year from Glassdoor data, and SalaryExpert quotes INR 8.74 lakh. Those are drawn from white-collar workers in cities who report salaries on job sites, and they are three to four times the PLFS figure. Neither is wrong; they describe different populations. For budgeting a BPO or IT hire, the job-site figures are closer to reality than the national survey.
Minimum Wage in India
Minimum wages in India are set by state governments under the Minimum Wages Act (now folded into the Code on Wages), with separate rates by skill level and often by zone within the state. The central government notifies a floor wage, but the state rates are the operative ones, and they vary by more than two to one.
| State and zone | Unskilled (monthly) | Skilled (monthly) | Effective | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Karnataka, Zone 1 (Greater Bengaluru) | INR 24,407 | INR 29,316 | May 22, 2026 | Karnataka notification via Labour Law Help |
| Delhi (all shops and establishments) | INR 18,456 | INR 22,411 | April 1, 2025 order; a dearness-allowance revision from October 2025 was pending confirmation | Delhi Labour Department via HR Engage |
| Maharashtra, Zone I (Mumbai and major cities), shops and establishments | INR 14,155 | INR 15,766 | July 1, 2026 | Maharashtra notification via Labour Law Help |
Karnataka's May 2026 notification was a roughly 60 percent jump and, for the first time, applied a uniform rate across all scheduled employments rather than industry-specific rates. Delhi revises its rates each April and October through a dearness allowance adjustment. Maharashtra's rate is a basic wage plus a special allowance that is revised twice a year.
For a BPO or IT employer, the minimum wage is rarely the binding constraint: entry-level customer service pay in the major cities is above the unskilled minimum. It matters for support staff, security, housekeeping, and any facility you run, and it sets the floor for the statutory bonus calculation.
Salaries by Region and Sector
The PLFS press note does not publish state-wise or industry-wise earnings; those tables sit in the full annual report. What the survey does show is that regular-wage earnings vary less across states than self-employed earnings do, and that urban salaried workers earn materially more than rural ones.
In practice, salaries for the roles a foreign employer hires cluster in seven metro areas: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi NCR (Gurugram and Noida), and Kolkata. Bengaluru and Hyderabad lead for technology roles; Delhi NCR, Pune, and Hyderabad have the deepest BPO and shared-services pools; Kolkata and the tier-two cities (Jaipur, Indore, Kochi, Coimbatore, Chandigarh) are 15 to 30 percent cheaper for the same role with a smaller candidate pool. Job-site averages by city reflect that: Coursera's August 2026 compilation of Glassdoor data put Hyderabad and Coimbatore near INR 5.3 to 5.7 lakh a year against INR 2.5 to 3 lakh in Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Kanpur, though those figures depend heavily on which jobs get reported in each city.
By industry, information technology and IT-enabled services pay the most for comparable experience, followed by financial services and pharmaceuticals. Voice-based BPO pays less than IT support, and non-voice back-office work (data processing, accounting, claims) sits between the two.
What Remote and BPO Roles Pay
The ranges below are market data from Talent.com India, accessed September 19, 2026, which aggregates posted and reported salaries. They are not official statistics. Annual figures are divided by 12, and Talent.com's totals may be quoted as CTC rather than take-home.
| Role | Typical monthly range (INR) | Average (INR) | Average (USD) | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Customer service representative | 26,700 to 30,800 | 27,900 | $291 | 10,000 salaries |
| Virtual assistant | 22,000 to 56,200 | 31,250 | $326 | 10,000 salaries |
| Accountant | 26,000 to 42,300 | 33,300 | $347 | 6,490 salaries |
| Team leader | 25,400 to 121,700 | 35,000 | $365 | 10,000 salaries |
| Software developer | 45,800 to 91,700 | 75,000 | $781 | 10,000 salaries |
The customer service range is tight because most postings are entry-level voice roles in large BPOs. International voice process (US or UK customers, night shift) pays 20 to 40 percent above domestic voice, and a shift allowance for night work is standard. The team leader range is wide because the title covers everyone from a BPO floor lead at INR 30,000 to an engineering lead at INR 1.2 lakh. For software developers, the Talent.com average of INR 75,000 a month is a mid-level figure; freshers from non-elite colleges start at INR 25,000 to 40,000, and senior engineers at product companies earn INR 1.5 to 3 lakh a month.
What It Costs to Employ Someone in India
Indian employer contributions are calculated on different bases, which is why quoted percentages vary so much. Provident fund and gratuity are calculated on basic salary (typically 40 to 50 percent of gross), while ESI is calculated on gross and applies only to lower-paid employees.
| Cost | Employer rate | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) | 12 percent of basic salary plus about 0.5 percent EDLI and 0.5 percent admin charges | Establishments with 20 or more employees; mandatory for employees with basic pay up to INR 15,000, customary for all |
| Employees' State Insurance (ESI) | 3.25 percent of gross | Employees earning INR 21,000 or less a month in covered establishments |
| Gratuity | Accrued at about 4.81 percent of basic (15 days' pay per year of service) | Payable after five years of service |
| Statutory bonus | 8.33 to 20 percent of basic, on a wage ceiling | Employees earning up to INR 21,000 in establishments covered by the Payment of Bonus Act |
| Professional tax | Up to INR 200 a month, deducted from the employee | Varies by state |
These rates match the HiveDesk employer of record guide for India. The EPF rate and wage ceiling are set under the EPF Act; check the current EPFO circulars for admin charge changes.
Worked example for a customer service representative in Pune at INR 30,000 gross, structured as INR 15,000 basic plus allowances, which is a typical BPO pay structure.
| Component | Monthly amount |
|---|---|
| Gross salary | INR 30,000 |
| EPF employer share (12 percent of INR 15,000 basic) | INR 1,800 |
| EDLI and EPF admin charges (about 1 percent of basic) | INR 150 |
| ESI | Not applicable (gross above INR 21,000) |
| Gratuity accrual (4.81 percent of basic) | INR 722 |
| Total monthly employer cost | INR 32,672 (about $340) |
The on-cost is 8.9 percent of gross. For a lower-paid agent at INR 18,000 gross with INR 9,000 basic, ESI applies: EPF INR 1,080, admin INR 90, ESI INR 585, gratuity INR 433, for a total of INR 20,188 and an on-cost of 12.2 percent. EOR vendors that quote 15 to 20 percent are usually applying the 12 percent EPF rate to gross rather than basic, or adding their own insurance.
Most formal employers add group health insurance (INR 500 to 1,500 a month per employee), and many BPOs provide transport for night shifts, which is a legal requirement for women working late in several states. If you hire through an employer of record, the provider fee of $300 to $500 a month per employee will exceed the statutory on-costs by a wide margin at these salary levels.
Salary Trends
Salaried wages grew 5.8 percent for men and 7.2 percent for women between 2024 and 2025 in nominal terms, according to the PLFS press note. Retail inflation was 4.82 percent in August 2026, up from 4.45 percent in July, per MoSPI data reported by Trade Brains, so real wage growth for the average salaried worker has been modest.
The market for skilled workers moves faster than the national average. Salary budget surveys for 2025-26 cited by Playroll put overall increments at about 9 percent, with financial services and real estate above 10 percent and technology consulting closer to 6.6 percent after two years of hiring freezes. Expect 8 to 10 percent annual increments for BPO and IT support staff in the metros and higher attrition if you pay less.
How US and UK Companies Pay Workers in India
Employer of record. A provider becomes the legal employer, handles EPF, ESI, TDS withholding, and state registrations, and invoices you monthly. It is the standard route for teams under about twenty-five and the fastest for a first hire. See the India EOR guide and the EOR cost comparison.
Independent contractor. Widely used for developers and specialists, and workable when the person has other clients and controls their own hours. Indian tax law treats a full-time, exclusive, directed worker as an employee, and the contractor route also creates a permanent establishment risk for the foreign company if the contractor negotiates contracts on its behalf. The guide to paying remote workers in India covers payment rails, TDS, and GST.
Local entity. A private limited company or a branch office is the right structure above fifty employees or when you want Software Technology Park or SEZ benefits. Incorporation takes a few weeks; bank accounts, GST, EPF, and ESI registrations take longer.
The India labor law guide covers working hours, leave, and termination, and the outsourcing to India best practices guide covers vendor selection and management.
Tracking Time and Attendance for a Team in India
Indian teams supporting US or UK customers work night shifts, and overtime, shift allowances, and attendance all depend on accurate records. HiveDesk tracks time automatically from a desktop app, captures periodic screenshots, and generates timesheets for approval, and it handles scheduling, attendance, and leave for the same team. It is $5 per user per month on a single plan and has served distributed teams since 2011.
Automatic time tracking, screenshots, scheduling and timesheets across time zones, $5 per user per month.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average salary in India in USD?
About $222 a month, or $2,660 a year, for a regular salaried employee, based on the PLFS 2025 average of INR 21,285 at September 2026 exchange rates. Blending in self-employed and casual workers brings the all-worker average closer to $150 a month.
What is a good salary in India?
In a metro city, INR 50,000 to 75,000 a month (about $520 to $780) supports a comfortable single-person lifestyle with rent, transport, and savings; a family in Mumbai or Bengaluru generally needs INR 1 lakh or more. In tier-two cities the same standard costs 25 to 35 percent less. Those figures are two to three times the national salaried average, which is why they feel "good".
Is $25,000 a year a good salary in India?
Yes. $25,000 is about INR 24 lakh a year, or INR 2 lakh a month, which is roughly nine times the average salaried wage and above what most mid-level software engineers earn. It is a senior professional salary in any Indian city.
What is the 1 percent salary in India?
Income-tax data and household surveys put the threshold for the top 1 percent of earners somewhere around INR 20 to 25 lakh a year, though estimates vary widely by method. On the PLFS scale, anyone earning INR 1 lakh a month is far into the top few percent of salaried workers.
What is the minimum wage in India per month?
There is no single figure. Each state notifies its own rates by skill level and zone: about INR 14,155 for unskilled work in Mumbai, INR 18,456 in Delhi, and INR 24,407 in Bengaluru as of mid-2026. The rates are revised once or twice a year.
