How to Convert Military Time

Military time runs from 0000 to 2359 on a 24-hour clock, written as four digits with no colon. The conversion follows three simple rules:

1

Morning hours stay the same

From 1:00 AM to 11:59 AM, keep the hour and pad to four digits. 8:15 AM is 0815. 11:45 AM is 1145.

2

Afternoon and evening: add 12

From 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour. 1:00 PM is 1300, 5:30 PM is 1730, 11:59 PM is 2359. Going the other way, subtract 12 from any hour of 13 or greater.

3

Handle noon and midnight

12:00 PM (noon) stays 1200. 12:00 AM (midnight) becomes 0000 — and 12:30 AM becomes 0030.

Why Workplaces Use 24-Hour Time

Hospitals, contact centers, logistics, and any operation with overnight shifts rely on 24-hour time because it eliminates AM/PM ambiguity. A schedule that reads “10 to 6” can mean two very different shifts; one that reads 2200 to 0600 cannot be misread.

The same clarity matters for payroll. Overnight shifts that cross midnight are the most common source of timesheet errors — use our time duration calculator to check hours across midnight, or the shift schedule generator to build rotation patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time is 1730 in military time?

1730 is 5:30 PM in standard time. Subtract 12 from the hour for any military time of 1300 or later: 17 - 12 = 5, so 1730 becomes 5:30 PM.

How do I convert standard time to military time?

For AM times from 1:00 to 11:59, keep the hour and pad to four digits: 8:15 AM becomes 0815. For PM times, add 12 to the hour: 5:30 PM becomes 1730. Two special cases: 12:00 AM (midnight) becomes 0000, and 12:00 PM (noon) stays 1200.

Is midnight 0000 or 2400 in military time?

Both are used. 0000 marks the start of a new day and is the more common convention; 2400 marks the end of the previous day. Timekeeping and scheduling systems almost always use 0000, and the next minute is 0001.

Why do shift schedules and timesheets use 24-hour time?

The 24-hour clock removes AM/PM ambiguity, which prevents costly scheduling and payroll errors — especially for overnight shifts and teams spread across time zones. A shift written as 2200 to 0600 cannot be misread the way "10 to 6" can.

How do you say military time out loud?

Read the hours and minutes as numbers. On the hour, say "hundred": 0900 is "zero nine hundred" and 1400 is "fourteen hundred." With minutes, read them directly: 1735 is "seventeen thirty-five."
