Average Salary in South Africa (2026): Stats SA Data by Industry
Average monthly earnings in South Africa were R29,997 (about US$1,844) in February 2026 according to the Stats SA Quarterly Employment Statistics, with a national minimum wage of R30.23 an hour from March 2026 and statutory employer costs of only 2 to 4 percent.
Formal-sector employees in South Africa earned an average of R29,997 a month in February 2026, about US$1,844, according to the Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) published by Statistics South Africa. That figure includes bonuses and overtime and covers roughly 10.5 million people on the payrolls of non-agricultural businesses and public bodies. It is not what a typical South African takes home: the average is pulled up by a small group of high earners, most of the working-age population is outside formal employment, and the take-home averages reported by payments-industry indices sit around R21,000. For a company hiring contact-center or back-office staff in Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg, the relevant numbers are the industry averages, the R30.23 hourly minimum wage, and the unusually low statutory on-costs.
Exchange rate and dates
Dollar figures on this page use the mid-market rate of R16.266 per US dollar for 19 September 2026. The rand is one of the more volatile emerging-market currencies, so a rand salary that looks 10 percent cheaper in dollars this year may look 10 percent dearer next year without any change in local pay.
The Official Numbers
The QES is an establishment survey: Stats SA asks about 20,000 businesses and organizations what they paid their employees. Its headline, average monthly earnings of R29,997 in February 2026, rose 0.9 percent from R29,738 in November 2025 and 5.9 percent from R28,322 in February 2025. Excluding bonuses and overtime the average is a few percent lower in most industries.
Because the QES is a payroll survey it cannot tell you about the informal economy, domestic workers, agricultural workers or the self-employed, and it counts a person twice if they appear on two payrolls. The household-based Quarterly Labour Force Survey covers those groups but does not publish a comparable monthly earnings average. The nearest official median is the Income and Expenditure Survey 2022/23, which put mean household income at R204,359 a year and the median at R95,770, less than half the mean. That ratio is the clearest statement of how skewed South African incomes are.
Third-party figures disagree with Stats SA in predictable ways. BankservAfrica's take-home pay index, widely reported at R21,228 to R21,598 a month in mid-2026, measures net salaries actually paid into bank accounts, after tax and deductions, and is not comparable with a gross average. Salary aggregators that report "R15,000 to R25,000" are blending job postings with self-reported data. A 2022 QLFS-derived median of about R5,400 a month still circulates online and is both old and drawn from a different population.
Minimum Wage in South Africa
The national minimum wage is R30.23 for each ordinary hour worked from 1 March 2026, up 5 percent from R28.79, set by Government Gazette 54075 of 3 February 2026 under the National Minimum Wage Act. Farm workers and domestic workers receive the full rate; participants in the Expanded Public Works Programme receive R15.16. On the 45-hour week that the Basic Conditions of Employment Act allows, the minimum works out to R5,895 a month (R30.23 x 45 x 52 / 12), or R5,240 on a 40-hour week. Sectoral determinations and bargaining council agreements set higher floors in some industries, and contact-center work in the major metros is generally advertised well above the minimum.
Salaries by Industry
The QES publishes average monthly earnings for each formal industry. February 2026, including bonuses and overtime:
| Industry (QES, February 2026) | Average monthly earnings | USD | Year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electricity, gas and water | R61,401 | $3,775 | +10.3% |
| Community, social and personal services (includes government) | R36,915 | $2,270 | +6.0% |
| Mining and quarrying | R36,405 | $2,238 | +7.7% |
| Transport, storage and communication | R34,394 | $2,114 | +7.3% |
| Finance, insurance, real estate and business services | R33,634 | $2,068 | +5.9% |
| All formal non-agricultural industries | R29,997 | $1,844 | +5.9% |
| Manufacturing | R25,190 | $1,549 | +5.3% |
| Construction | R24,862 | $1,528 | +3.4% |
| Wholesale and retail trade | R19,082 | $1,173 | +6.1% |
Contact centers and business process outsourcers fall under business services, where the average of R33,634 reflects a mix of well-paid finance and professional roles and lower-paid support work. Trade, the largest private employer with 2.3 million people, has the lowest average at R19,082.
Salaries by Province
Stats SA does not publish provincial earnings in the QES. Gauteng (Johannesburg and Pretoria) and the Western Cape (Cape Town) are the high-wage provinces and the centers of the outsourcing industry; KwaZulu-Natal (Durban) is the third contact-center hub and generally pays below the two larger metros. Employers hiring remotely can expect the same role to be advertised at a discount of roughly 10 to 20 percent outside Gauteng and the Western Cape, but that is a market observation rather than an official statistic.
What Remote and BPO Roles Pay
Market ranges from Indeed South Africa (job postings over 36 months, updated September 2026) and PayScale (self-reported, updated June to July 2026). These are not official data, and the low ends of the Indeed ranges include part-time and entry-level postings.
| Role | Monthly range (ZAR) | Reported average | Monthly range (USD) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Call center representative | R3,750 to R14,884 | R6,104 | $231 to $915 | Indeed, 1,300 salaries |
| Customer service representative | R5,833 to R25,917 | R12,837 | $359 to $1,593 | PayScale, 552 profiles (annual figures divided by 12) |
| Administrative assistant (virtual assistant equivalent) | R833 to R21,167 | R9,954 | $51 to $1,301 | PayScale, 1,348 profiles |
| Bookkeeper | R8,583 to R30,083 | R18,243 | $528 to $1,849 | PayScale, 610 profiles |
| Team leader | R5,216 to R37,088 | R13,909 | $321 to $2,280 | Indeed, 74 salaries |
| Software engineer | R17,853 to R66,515 | R34,461 | $1,098 to $4,089 | Indeed, 223 salaries |
| Software developer | R10,083 to R55,750 | R28,845 | $620 to $3,427 | PayScale, 879 profiles |
Two things stand out for a US or UK employer. First, native-level English is standard rather than a premium skill, which is why South Africa competes with the Philippines for voice work despite higher base pay. Second, the spread between the Indeed call-center figure (R6,104) and the PayScale customer-service figure (R12,837) is the difference between outbound and inbound BPO seats staffed by new entrants and the retention-and-escalation seats staffed by experienced agents; budget for the latter if the work is complex.
What It Costs to Employ Someone in South Africa
South Africa has no mandatory 13th cheque, no employer pension contribution and no employer health contribution. The statutory list is short:
| Charge | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), employer share | 1% of remuneration | Capped at a remuneration ceiling of R17,712 a month, so a maximum of R177.12; the employee pays another 1% |
| Skills Development Levy (SDL) | 1% of total payroll | Only if annual payroll exceeds R500,000 |
| COIDA (workers' compensation) | About 0.1% to 8.3% by industry class | Office and contact-center work sits near the bottom of the range |
Worked example for a customer service agent at R9,000 a month in a company above the SDL threshold:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross salary | R9,000.00 |
| UIF 1% | R90.00 |
| SDL 1% | R90.00 |
| COIDA at 0.3% | R27.00 |
| Monthly employer cost | R9,207.00 (US$566) |
Statutory on-costs of 2.3 percent are among the lowest of any hiring destination. What raises the real cost is what competitive employers add voluntarily: medical aid contributions of R2,000 to R5,000 a month and retirement fund contributions of 5 to 15 percent of salary are standard in professional roles, and paid leave is a statutory 21 consecutive days a year (15 working days) plus 12 public holidays.
Salary Trends
Average earnings rose 5.9 percent in the year to February 2026 while consumer inflation was falling: Stats SA reported headline CPI at 4.3 percent in July 2026, down from 5.0 percent in June, the first slowdown in five months. That combination means formal wages grew about 1.5 points in real terms over the year. The minimum wage rose 5 percent in March 2026, which the Department of Employment and Labour described as inflation plus 1.5 percentage points, and the government's stated intention is to keep raising it modestly above inflation. Employment in the formal sector fell by 90,000 in the March 2026 quarter, so wage pressure from a tight labor market is not a factor; the unemployment rate remains above 30 percent.
How US and UK Companies Pay Workers in South Africa
Most foreign employers start with an employer of record in South Africa, which places the worker on a local contract, registers them for UIF and PAYE, and handles the Basic Conditions of Employment Act requirements. Because statutory costs are low and labor law is well codified in English, some companies move to a local entity earlier here than elsewhere; the exchange-control regime and the requirement for a local public officer are the main friction. Independent contracting is common in tech and design, but the Labour Relations Act presumes an employment relationship for anyone who works more than 40 hours a month under supervision, and reclassification claims go to the CCMA. The South Africa labor law guide covers hours, overtime at 150 and 200 percent, and dismissal procedure, and the EOR cost guide compares fees. For South Africa against other English-speaking destinations, see the nearshore versus offshore comparison and the labor cost calculation guide for BPOs.
Tracking Time and Attendance for a Team in South Africa
The Basic Conditions of Employment Act caps ordinary hours at 45 a week and overtime at 10, pays overtime at 150 percent (200 percent on Sundays and public holidays), and requires employers to keep a record of time worked and remuneration paid for three years. HiveDesk keeps that record automatically from the desktop and mobile apps, adds periodic screenshots for activity verification, and generates timesheets for approval, with scheduling, attendance and leave management in the single $5 per user per month plan. South Africa runs on a single time zone two hours ahead of London and six to seven ahead of US Eastern time, which makes it one of the easier destinations for overlapping shifts.
