What Is a Rotating Shift?

Any operation that runs longer than one person can work needs multiple shifts, and any operation that runs 24 hours needs at least three eight-hour shifts or two twelve-hour ones. Someone has to work nights. A fixed-shift model assigns permanent night workers, usually with a shift differential as compensation. A rotating-shift model has everyone take turns.

The rotation is defined by three variables. Direction is whether the shift moves later each cycle (day, then evening, then night, called forward or clockwise rotation) or earlier (night, then evening, then day, called backward or counterclockwise).
